How to Get a Job Another State - 5 Steps that get Results

- Hey everyone, this is Self Made Millennial,

I'm Madeline Mann and today we're gonna talk about five steps to get a job in another state.

Somewhere far away from where your current home is.

It is difficult to get a job in a place where you are nowhere to be found.

I will give you actionable tips to make sure you are moving in the right direction.

Step one,

write on your resume that you are planning on moving to that city,

or interested in moving to that city.

You can put this in your objective statement,

you could put this right next to your address on your resume,

it really doesn't matter exactly where it is, but get it on there.

If you are for sure planning on moving to that city,

I would also recommend that you update your Linkedin profile to say that city on it instead of your old city.

This is not dishonest as long as you tell them in the interview the date when you will officially be in that city for good.

The reason I'm telling you to do this is that I get resumes all the time and I'll hop on the phone with people and they'll go,

"Oh, I didn't realize that the company was in L.A.

"Oh, can I just work remotely?"

And that's a waste of everyone's time.

And so in order to make sure that the recruiter doesn't just assume that you are applying to the wrong job and that you just are gonna wanna work remote, make sure you tell them that you are willing to relocate.

Step number two,

during the interview, tell your interviewer that you are planning on moving to that city by a specific date and tell them what that date is.

This shows that you're super-serious about moving.

If you don't know exactly if, how,

or when you're gonna move then skip this stuff.

Step number three,

ask your friends if they know anyone in the city that you're moving to and then set up informational interviews with those people who they know.

The first one is an email that you can send people in your network, your friends,

to ask them for things,

so that you can then get these referrals to these other people.

The second one is how to do an informational interview.

So, you know,

your friends introduce you to these people in whatever city you're moving to,

what do you sit down and talk to them about?

I'll let you know exactly what that is in that article.

The reason why you're doing this is you need to build a network in that new city.

Each person who you meet and then they introduce you to another person,

gets you one step closer to that ultimate opportunity.

It takes a long way,

but the long way is ultimately the short way.

If that makes sense to you,

but it makes sense in my head.

Number four, reach out directly to people at those companies in that city who you want to work for.

Sure, you don't know them,

you're reaching out cold, but strangers are just friends you haven't met yet,

so just go for it.

Also, here is a winning example of an email by Rahul Iyer that he started sending when he was just trying to meet people in San Francisco.

This is great, make sure, just like he did,

write something custom to the person in the first paragraph, tell them your situation, and he asks for advice,

not a job,

and that's perfect because you should only ask about opportunities once you've gotten to know each other and then you can ask them if there's anyone else they recommend you meet.

Step number five set a time for in-person meetings.

So you've done all the previous steps.

You've had a bunch of video calls and phone calls and then you tell the people who you've been corresponding with, "Hey,

I am now going to be in town from this date

"to this date, can we find a time to meet in person?"

And by saying that you're only going to be in town from this date to this date,

that actually makes people more proactive and more likely to commit to the meeting since there's a time constraint.

I know it can be expensive to afford to travel somewhere and stay there for several days,
